Build-up begins to UAE's 41st National Day

The National Day is a landmark in the history of the UAE and it is a symbol of unity, cohesion and pride.

December 2, 1971 marks a glorious historic day that witnessed the unification of the United Arab Emirates as one entity and a strong cohesive country when Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan completed the unity of the seven emirates, turning the UAE from a conglomeration of seven emirates into one.

Ruler of Fujairah, and Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Minister of Defence,
at the ceremony in Dubai marking the founding of the UAE in 1971.

The story of unity dates back to February 27, 1968 when Shaikh Zayed held a meeting with Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, to discuss border issues. On December 2, 1971, the federation was announced officially including the seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Ras Al Khaimah later joined the federation officially on February 10, 1972.

Since that day, the day of the birth of unity, UAE celebrate a National day anniversary for week or more before. All buildings and establishments both public and private are decorated with colorful lights.

  • In the Southern regions of India, Diwali commemorates the triumph of Lord Krishna over wicked - Narakasura.
  • To the Jain population, Diwali is celebrated to mark the spiritual triumph of Lord Mahavera who attained Nirvana.
